Lennart Gruensel, a Master’s graduate from Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, embarks on a journey to this lost paradise in his master’s thesis »/Imagine Eden«. Between concrete jungles and digital landscapes, he explores the relationship between humans, nature, and technology, together with his companion Argos, an advanced artificial intelligence. On their journey, they create visionary images that invite reflection.
WELLBEING
The Nordstadtgalerie invited interested students, as well as non-students, to a series of four self-care events. Attendees had the opportunity to focus on their well-being in a relaxed setting. In collaboration with the Psychological Student Counseling Service, the FH-Knitting Café, and ‚Community Music‘ from the Concert Hall, a diverse ‚good mood program‘ was created.

For over a decade, the Nordstadtgalerie has been a vibrant part of the „Hochschule vor Ort,“ hosting workshops and exhibitions that address a wide range of societal issues, from urban living to academic debates. At the event, visitors had the opportunity to contribute their own ideas, fostering a dynamic exchange on future creative events and topics of interest.
Warm und sicher?
The event included a lecture by Tim Sonnenberg on the stigmatization faced by homeless individuals, accompanied by an exhibition of Lennart Hüppe’s photographs and a window display showcasing local efforts. The event also featured discussions with social activist Janita-Marja Juvonen and a „Social City Tour“ organised by bodo e.V. providing insights into the daily lives of those affected by homelessness.
Academic Connection
The Nordstadtgalerie hosted the GT+SWP (Global Transformation and Social Work Practice) project, a collaborative initiative spanning from 2023 to 2026 and involving the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the University of Johannesburg, Midland State University of Harare, and Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts.
From Lost Space To Safer Space
On October 14, 2023, the African-German community at FH Dortmund hosted a networking event themed „From Lost Space to Safer Space,“ held at the Nordstadtgalerie. This gathering welcomed Black People, Indigenous People, and People of Colour (BIPoC), marking the beginning of a series of similar events planned for the future.
Mind The Gap
Under the theme „Shining a Light on the Gender Data Gap,“ Nicole Wilke, a graduate in photography and film, exhibited the results of her bachelor’s thesis at the Nordstadtgalerie. The young photographer uniquely highlighted the often-invisible issue of the „Gender Data Gap“. Using the art of light painting, she created exceptionally distinctive photographs.

The event at Nordstadtgalerie, in collaboration with FabLab, provided a deep dive into the world of 3D printing. It featured enriching discussions and a hands-on workshop, allowing attendees to experience 3D printing firsthand and showcasing the hidden processes behind a 3D printer through Finn Tödte’s audiovisual piece „DRUCKMOMENT.“

The event invited attendees to explore the correlation between heat and the lack of green spaces in urban areas through a city walk across Nordstadt and two expert lectures. Participants delved into how heat builds up in densely built urban zones, gaining insights on managing heat with practical tips and strategies. The event also showcased interactive projects advocating for a greener Nordstadt.

The Nordstadt Library transformed the gallery into a vibrant hub of knowledge, offering book enthusiasts easy access to a wide range of literature through an open bookcase. The event featured engaging activities like a reading night and a book swap, fostering discussions among attendees. Highlighted by a conversation with Eva Schameitat from the FH Dortmund Library.

Romina Maillaro, a master’s graduate in Applied Social Sciences from FH Dortmund, introduced her publication „Why is the Leadership of Social Organizations Male?“ at the Nordstadtgalerie. This presentation was part of the „FLÜGGE“ series.
Hey Baby
Leonie Ioannidis, a communication design student from FH Dortmund, showcased her bachelor project „Hey Baby,“ a guidebook for expectant parents in Easy Language, at the Nordstadtgalerie. The exhibition featured illustrations and included interactive evenings for discussions and a complementary yoga workshop for attendees.
FLÜGGE x abc.ramics
At the HvO-Nordstadtgalerie, a discussion was hosted to explore the journey into entrepreneurship post-graduation, featuring insights from the founders of abc.ramics and the FH Dortmund’s Startup Service. The event included a free pottery workshop on „Handbuilding“ and showcased an accompanying window exhibition both at the gallery and online.
Psychologie unter Politischem Diktat und Justiz
Prof. Dr. Katja Nowacki and Prof. Dr. Susanne Guski-Leinwand showcased findings from the research project „Soul Work in Socialism (SiSaP)“ at the Nordstadtgalerie. The event was featuring lectures that offered insights into the population’s journey from protest to opposition, leading to change, complemented by a poster exhibition.
